Reading bands (the colour-coded system many UK primary schools use) cause real confusion because different schools and reading schemes use slightly different colour orders and pace — there's no single, universal "Year 3 band."
A rough general guide
Most reading scheme colour systems progress roughly: Pink, Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, Orange, Turquoise, Purple, Gold, White, Lime, and beyond into "free reading" territory. By Year 3, many confident readers are moving through Gold, White or Lime bands, though the range of genuinely normal variation at this point is considerable — some strong readers are already free-reading chapter books independently, others are still solidly working through earlier bands, and both can be entirely fine.
Why band colour matters less than it seems to
By Year 3, comprehension and genuine engagement with what's being read start mattering more than the specific colour band — a child confidently reading and understanding a slightly "lower" band book is often in a stronger position than a child pushed too fast through bands without real comprehension.
The most useful question to actually ask
Rather than "what colour band should they be on," a more genuinely useful question for the class teacher is: "is my child progressing at a normal pace for them, and are they reading with real understanding at their current level?" This gives you something actionable, unlike a colour comparison to a national average that doesn't really exist in a standardised way.
When band level is genuinely worth discussing
If a child seems genuinely stuck at the same band for a long stretch, with little progress despite regular reading, that's worth raising directly — not the specific colour itself, but the lack of movement over time.
The honest bottom line
Band systems are a useful internal school tool for matching books to ability, not a nationally standardised benchmark parents can reliably compare against. Progress and genuine comprehension matter more than the specific colour at any given moment.
